Connor & Gunn Buried in Vasti by Rivka Vann introduces us to two characters (Connor and Gunn) who have spent a long time apart but they must come back together and solve a murder case. Detective work is never easy and sometimes things just don't come together as fast as you wish they would - yet with a little bit of hard work and some help from old friends, anything can happen and anything can be solved. This is one hefty book and honestly I enjoyed every single page of it. Clancy Connor and Bess Gunn have some fantastic depth of character to them. The further you get into the book the more they come alive as characters with more layers being exposed as you go. The writing is true to life and you don't always find that with mysteries. So often the detective just goes from win to win and solves the case in a short amount of time. This book shows that detective work is not a perfect science, that is it work, but in the end things do get done. While the book is a true murder mystery, there is also some levity and humor to keep you smiling and overall just enjoying the book. Rivka Vann has found just the right balance here and knows how to write. This is my first read by Rivka Vann but I hope it will not be the last. If you are looking for a thick, enjoyable and juicy read, then this is going to be the one for you.

I totally enjoyed this book. It's the most honest detective story I've ever read. By honest I mean that instead of wowing you with what this brilliant detective can deduce, the writer takes you on the detection journey along with the detective. And I love the detective. Clancy is a sort of a down to earth female gumshoe. Totally professional, totally thorough, and gutsy. She gets in on this case at the behest of her old friend and one time lover. You are in on her thought process. You see her interviewing witnesses. All the relevant locales are openly described. Buried in Vasti held my interest to the very conclusion. But the bonus in this book to me was the witty wry description of life in a nasty little small town in the south, down to the drawling sheriff, and the descriptions of southern cooking. It's a big long juicy read. I hope Rivka Vann comes out with more. I particularly liked getting to know Clancy as a person. I'm hoping for more about her and her life. 5 stars.Product details

I loved Connor and Gunn Buried in Vasti. At first I was a little concerned that the book was so hefty but as I got to know the characters I was glad I was going to be able to hang out with them a little longer. I look forward to their return with the authors next book.
The complexity of building likeable characters, laying out the crime scenes, developing excitement and anticipation, well done. The cultural references, dinner menus, and dialogue had me chuckling out loud, reminding me of my growing-up years in Kentucky!
Great book. Intrigued to read more by this author. Very compelling. You should give it a try! Definitely kept us up talking!
Buried in Vasti is a great read. It's so compelling, I could barely put it down from page one. I loved the main character, Clancy the private detective, as well as her interesting background. The cultural references are interesting, humorous, and well done. I love that Clancy spent much of her life in Detroit, because that is where I grew up and I know it well. I look forward to reading the next book, finding out more about Clancy and all the trouble she gets into. Hopefully, there will be more southern recipes too!
